Last week I was riding my bike through Amsterdam on a wintery afternoon. The sun was already very low in the sky as pedestrian passed through a tunnel which gave me a surreal view of people walking toward the sun. Their dark silhouettes stand out against the bright sunlight. I thought to myself, “What a perfect shot this would be.” But as I was riding quickly and blinded by the sun, it was already too late—the moment had passed. So, I decided to return the next day at the same time to try and capture the scene I had glimpsed only for a few seconds.
The following day, I stood in the cold, windy tunnel, pressed against the wall with my camera in hand, trying not to get run over by cyclists. And there it was again—the surreal sight of people walking toward the light.
I used triple exposure to add more dynamism to this black and white scene. All in all, it resulted in a composition called “negative space,” which I titled “exodus”.

Haunting and surreal image – perfect for our times!
